Development of new residences and open spaces near the historical centre of Chioggia (Venice), upon an area which lies in between the borough of Sottomarina and the Lusenzo lagoon.

The proposed project rebuilds the urban margin of Sottomarina along the Lusenzo lagoon, by reconstituting the typical permeability of the lagoon urban fabric. The borough’s paths connect the main infrastructures, pedestrian, motorised or navigable, with the lagoon areas.

The built area is formed by buildings which are different in height, but always contribute in drawing an homogenous urban fabric, oriented in the same way as the existing city. This in turn provides additional access to the lagoon by means of new public green areas.

The open spaces in between dwellings are an opportunity to provide high quality public space for all, including the existing residents. The “belt” area between the old and new residences constitutes a path with a series of very small squares and green spaces, on which new commercial services can develop. The public spaces are mainly green, urban and lively.

The larger green spaces and a new sports area are linked to the main road of Sottomarina by means of three “green fingers”, which have both a connective function and are lively public open spaces.

The central portion of the project area is planned to maintain the existing character of the landscape of Laguna Veneta, otherwise called “Barena”. The park, which is on different levels, represents the typical landscape character of the lagoon. Through time, it will create new habitats for fauna, constituting an ecological enclave of particular value, inside the urban area of Sottomarina.
