The kindergarten's open space, the concept of which was defined following a participatory design phase with the teachers, is designed around the children's needs and provides space for adventure and individual development. Children of different ages, genders and personalities should feel comfortable in a safe atmosphere, realise that they are part of nature and learn to appreciate and respect it.
The garden becomes a play landscape that allows for a wide range of activities. The design of the space, the use of a wide range of stimulating materials and the variety of planting create countless opportunities for play. Play equipment is used sparingly in the design and it is not the main focus.
The variety of natural phenomena, shapes, textures, colours and smells means that the garden can be discovered anew every day, in all weathers and in all seasons and it provides materials for making and experimenting.

The redesign utilises and enhances the positive features of the site, such as the trees to the east providing natural shade, the slope on the eastern boundary and the existing different levels of play. The play areas are continuous, spacious and differentiated in function. They provide a framework for a wide range of independent activities. There are areas for scooting, romping and running and a ball field, as well as areas for creativity and self-awareness, with different seating and retreat areas at different points around the site.

Existing high quality paving and play equipment was reused. Soil movement was minimised. Durable natural materials have been used wherever possible. Planting is enriched with hardy, predominantly native shrubs. Where appropriate, flowering meadows have replaced the more common short mown lawns, as they are naturally more interesting and easier to maintain.
