As requested by the client, the design combines elements of an English garden with those of a more formal style. The gently sloping site is generously terraced with natural stone walls and further structured by a combination of curving and straight paths. The main paths are made of decomposed gravel, while the side paths are simply mown into higher lawns. A circular path opens up the garden close to its boundary, while a central axis connects the immediate surroundings of the house with the terrace and a quiet seating area at the edge, from where there is an almost uninterrupted view of the garden.
Hedges and shrubs give the garden a clear spatial structure. Hornbeam and red-leaved barberry are used for the hedges below the house, while yew hedges provide a quiet backdrop to the herbaceous borders and shrubs above. The clipped dark hedges emphasise the looseness and variety of the planting and provide an effective contrast.
