The town of Rehau intends to sustainably strengthen the industrial location of Hochfranken by creating a supra-regional tourism project and to contribute to increasing the quality of life in the region. The challenging topic of communicating sustainability and presenting the social value of biodiversity is to be conveyed to a wide audience in the format of an experience centre in a vivid and eventful way. The aim is to attract around 80,000 visitors per year. It was therefore planned to construct an exhibition building with outdoor facilities for the exposition content "Biodiversity”.
The structure of the building, partially subdued in the hilly terrain, and the outdoor are thought and designed as a continuum, developing in a spiral over the entire site. The tour of exposition in the building is followed by a discovery walk through the outdoor area with the individual thematic areas named in the exhibition concept.
First the visitor wanders through the various forms of the domesticated garden, some of which are located on the roof top of the building. More themed areas of the Spiral of Diversity follow as visitors continue their tour across the grounds. Each themed area offers structures and elements to convey the main themes using various media. In terms of layout, they echo the circular structures inside the building and are designed differently depending on the theme.
The further the visitor moves away from the building, the less visible the human influence on the natural structures becomes. Succession areas, various meadow structures and forest-like stands are given free rein to develop.
